Professional buyer verification: common questions
Practical answers for Shopify merchants reviewing professional buyers with BuyerClear.
Updated 7 September 2026. BuyerClear is in a pre-release pilot. These answers describe the latest test version.
What does BuyerClear verify for a Shopify store?
BuyerClear helps Shopify merchants review professional buyer credentials before granting B2B access. It compares the buyer’s entered details with supported official registry evidence and, when supplied, a reading of the uploaded document. A staff member approves, declines or requests changes. A matching record does not prove that the applicant holds the credential.
Does a registry match approve a buyer automatically?
No. A current Shopify staff session and an explicit decision are required. BuyerClear keeps the entered details, document reading and registry result separate so staff can compare them. An unavailable source is not reported as a missing license.
Which professional licenses and states are supported?
Automatic checks depend on the exact license class and issuing authority, not just the state. Check the pilot coverage table before inviting buyers. Classes without a configured source require a manual official check, and configured sources can still be unavailable or stale. The table describes the current test version; older installations can differ.
Must buyers upload a license image or PDF?
A shop can make the supporting file optional for professional license applications. Buyers still enter the license type, issuing authority, state, exact number, holder and expiry. Resale certificate applications require an original file. Accepted uploads are JPEG, PNG or PDF, up to 10 MB.
Can BuyerClear read scanned PDFs reliably?
Images are read by a vision model; PDFs use their readable text layer. A scanned PDF without usable text may need a clear JPEG or PNG instead, or staff can read the original. Document extraction can misread or invent fields. It never replaces what the buyer typed or makes an approval decision.
Does installing BuyerClear hide wholesale products or prices?
Your Shopify catalogs control products and prices. BuyerClear manages approved company locations’ access to a B2B market you choose. To keep products trade-only, configure their publication in Shopify, including exclusion from public Region catalogs. Test both a retail visitor and an approved buyer before going live.
Do I need Shopify Plus to use BuyerClear?
Shopify offers B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow and Advanced, with up to three active catalogs across B2B markets. Plus allows unlimited catalogs and direct assignment to company locations. BuyerClear’s main access flow uses a selected B2B market. Confirm that your shop has an eligible market and the required staff permissions during the pilot compatibility review.
When does an approved buyer receive Shopify access?
Approval starts the Shopify access steps. BuyerClear marks access active only after Shopify confirms the intended company location and market membership. A failed step stays visible for staff to retry. If a customer already belongs to a company, staff select and confirm its existing location before approval.
What happens when a professional license expires?
A daily job checks expiry and removes BuyerClear-managed access when a credential no longer qualifies. It checks other current approved credentials before removal so an approved renewal can preserve access. Unrelated access granted outside BuyerClear is preserved. Expiry checks are included on every plan.
Does a professional license make a buyer tax-exempt?
No. Professional licenses never grant a resale tax exemption. The separate resale flow can apply the Texas reseller exemption for an approved Texas resale certificate when the merchant enables it. BuyerClear is not a tax-certificate archive: originals are normally scheduled for deletion 90 days after submission, and the merchant must keep its own required archive.
How much does BuyerClear cost?
Planned launch pricing is Free for up to 5 distinct approved buyers and Core at $29/month for additional approved buyers. Both include one deciding reviewer. Renewals do not consume another free place, and the allowance does not reset monthly. Paid plans are not live yet and will require separate confirmation in Shopify.
Is BuyerClear available in the Shopify App Store?
BuyerClear is currently in a pre-release pilot and is not listed in the Shopify App Store. Contact the team for a compatibility review. The public documentation describes the latest version in a separate test installation; an older installation may not have every pilot feature.
